Men's Tennis Competes at Middle Tennessee Fall Invitational

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Several members of the University of Louisville men's tennis team opened the fall season at Murfreesboro, Tenn., at the Middle Tennessee Fall Invitational Sept. 20-22. The tournament featured a ranked flight, as well as three other flights of singles and three flights of doubles. Participating teams included: Arkansas-Little Rock, Auburn, Austin Peay, Evansville, Jacksonville State, Kentucky, Lipscomb, Louisville, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Ouachita Baptist, Ole Miss, Southern Illinois, Tennessee, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, UT Martin, Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky.

Freshman Jhonny Berrido advanced to the semifinals of the A1 singles defeating Kentucky's Matt Emery 6-1, 6-4 and Vanderbilt's Zach Dailey 6-3, 6-2 on the opening day. He went on to beat Tennessee Tech's Gernot Fischer 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 before falling to Vandy's Matt Lockin, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

Another freshman, Jakob Gustafsson defeated Jacksonville State's Ruben Herrera 7-6, 6-4 and upset the flight's top seed, Auburn's Rodrigo Minozzo 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(6). The eventual champion, Oachita Baptist's Gilles Lagardere topped Gustafsson 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. "Jhonny and Jakob's results verify that we've brought in a special recruiting class to U of L, combined with nationally ranked Octavian Nicodim, our future looks very bright."
