
Cardinal Rowers Earn CRCA Athletic and Academic Honors

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville senior Stephanie George, juniors Lucy Svehla and Leslie Walters, and sophomore Allison Kemphaus have been selected to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) South Region Second Team. Svehla, Walters and Kemphaus also earned CRCA Scholar-Athlete distinction for the 2001-02 academic year.
This marks the first time in the program's three-year history that the Cardinals have placed members on either team.
George served as team captain for the Cardinals this past year. A native of Louisville, she rowed in the three seat for the Cards.
Svehla rowed in the five seat for the Cards. The Langley, British Columbia, native has a 3.64 grade point average and is majoring in exercise science.
Walters, who started on the novice squad in the fall before earning a spot on the varsity in the spring, rowed in the six seat. A native of Hodgenville, Ky., she holds a 3.83 grade point average and is majoring in economics.
Kemphaus rowed stroke for the Cardinals and is one of the top 10 lightweight rowers in the nation. The Ft. Wright, Ky., native, who was named to the Verizon Academic District IV At-Large Third Team last month, carries a 3.86 grade point average and is majoring in sports medicine and exercise science.
"I am really proud of each of these four individuals," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "They have all worked extremely hard, both on the water and in the classroom, and it is great to see them honored for their accomplishments."
The CRCA All-America and All-Region awards are designed to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains. Honorees must meet eligibility rules as defined by her institution and have participated in at least 75 percent of the season's races in the first varsity boat, and the student-athlete's head coach must be a member in good standing of the CRCA.
For each region, up to 12 rowers and, if nominated, a coxswain received first team honors, with the same number eligible for second team honors. The CRCA All-America first and second teams will be selected by the regional chairpersons from the rowers who have received All-Region first team honors.
The National Scholar-Athlete award is designed to recognize the outstanding academic accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains. The criteria include meeting eligibility rules as defined by her institution, participating in her second, third or fourth year of eligibility, participating in at least 75 percent of the season's races in the varsity boat and owning a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade-point average through the fall semester of the current season, and the student-athlete's head coach must be a member in good standing of the CRCA.
For the 2002 season, 93 NCAA Division I student-athletes received the National Scholar-Athlete Award, while 67 Division II and III student-athletes received the award.
