Softball Tops Houston 5-2

HOUSTON. - The University of Louisville softball closed out the regular season with a 5-2 win over Conference USA opponent Houston.
The Cardinals got on the board early in the first when Kenzie Meisenburg led off the game with a triple and scored on a Houston error.
Louisville added to the lead in the second inning when Aja Sherman hit a two-out single, moved to second on Shannon Nord's hit. Meisenburg's double brought them both home to make the score 3-0.
The Cougars responded in the bottom half of the inning when Kristen Glowacz and Kim Nesloney and Melissa Lynch began the inning with single to load the bases. Leslie Seay's base hit brought in Glowacz for a 3-1 game.
The Cards added two more runs in the sixth on Sara Bausher's two-run homer which also brought in Meisenburg who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Houston put another run in the sixth when Arelis Ferreris led off with a walk, moved to second on Jenilee Skender's sacrifice bunt, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Jeanie Davis to make it a 5-2 game.
Starter Jessica Rak (22-14) picked up the win for the Cards, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and striking out four in seven innings. Offensively, Meisenburg led U of L, batting 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. Calderon and Nord also had two hits.
Louisville (25-26, 11-10 C-USA) will travel to South Florida for the Conference USA Softball Championship May 9-12. Houston finished the season at 35-25 (9-14).
The Cards earned a No. 4 seed in the tournament and will face the fifth-seeded host South Florida Thursday at 1:00 p.m.
