Softball Falls to Southern Miss

The University of Louisville softball team fell to Southern Miss 5-3 Friday on the second day of the Conference USA Softball Championship. The loss eliminated the Cards from the tournament.
Louisville broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third as Shannon Nord led off with a single, stole second and scored on Meisenburg's hit. Meisenburg advanced to second on the play and scored on a single by Calderon. Sparks' single down the left field line brought Calderon home to make the score 3-0.
The Golden Eagles put up a five-spot in the fifth. Sarah Boyd singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Laura Smith, advanced to third on a single by Laura Davis and scored on when Kristie Martin reached on a Louisville error. Chrissy King, pinch running for Davis, crossed the plate on Heather Bell's sacrifice fly. Tammy Edwards' three-run homer made it a 5-3 game.
Starter Jessica Rak (23-14) took the loss, allowing five runs, one earned on six hits and striking out two in seven innings. Sparks went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Louisville finishes the season with a 27-28 record.
