The University of Louisville's big three of Grant Sturgeon, Brett Jones and Mark Anderson gave it their all, firing a collective five-over par 218 in windy and cold conditions in the final round of the Marshall Invitational, however, it was not enough to overcome a poor opening-round on Friday as the Cardinals finished 13th in the 20-team field.
As they have done for much of the spring season, the Cards entered the final round of play looking to rebound from a poor performance in Friday's opening rounds. Trying to rebound from a 25-over par 308 in the opening-round on Friday, the Cards shaved nine strokes off that score in the second round and another three in the third and final round on Saturday to finish the tournament in 13-place, 26 strokes behind tournament champion Toledo.
Jones, a freshman, led the charge on Saturday, carding a one-over par 72 to finish the event tied for 18th with a 10-over 223. Sturgeon, the lone senior in the lineup, recovered from an opening-round 79 with consecutive 73s to finish tied for 31st with a 12-over 225. Like Sturgeon, Anderson, a freshman, recovered valiantly from an opening-round 82 with a second-round 75 and a final-round 73 to finish tied with fellow freshman Charlie Woo for 62nd-place with a 17-over 230.
Woo and sophomore Matt Bascom could not sustain strong efforts on Friday as both faded in the final round of play. Woo carded an opening-round 77 and a second-round 75 but fell behind in the poor weather conditions with a final-round 78. Making his first appearance of the spring season, Bascom followed a 78 and 76 on Friday with a final-round 80.
The start of the third round was delayed two hours due to light snow fall overnight that left nearly an inch of snow on the course. Due to this, the third round fixed tee start scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. was scratched for a 9:30 shotgun start.
The Cards return to action at the Conference USA Championships in Navarre, Fla., April 22-24.
