OXFORD, Ohio - The eleventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Mid-American Conference opponent Miami University (Ohio) 1-0 Wednesday night at Miami.
Much of the first half was played in the Louisville offensive end of the field, with the Cardinals recording eight shots on goal and eight penalty corners. Miami goalkeeper Kerri Orr posted eight saves to keep the Cards off the scoreboard as the teams battled to a scoreless halftime. The game remained tied until Louisville junior Desire' Miller broke through on a penalty stroke with eight minutes remaining in the game. The goal ensured Louisville's MAC -leading fourth win.
Louisville mounted an attack late in the second half that would result in the game-winning penalty stroke. Junior Olivia Netzler centered a pass from the left side that got lost in the RedHawk defense and was whistled dead when it came to rest under Miami goalkeeper Kerri Orr and a RedHawk defender. Miller took advantage of the stroke by placing her shot in the upper corner of the net.
The Cardinals almost had a 2-0 lead when sophomore Suzanne Irwin chipped a shot from the far right that rattled off both posts and back into the field of play. Miami managed one more rush when they added an extra forward, at the cost of a back, and surged down the field only to be thwarted by the Louisville defense.
The Cardinals held a 14-1 advantage in penalty corners 14-1 and outshot Miami 26-3. Louisville's goalie senior Janina Perna needed no saves in the shutout. Miami's Orr finished the contest with 14 stops. The RedHawks drop to 1-10 (0-5 MAC).
Louisville 9-4 (4-1) will play host to Saint Louis on Saturday, Oct, 12 at 1:00 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
