Rowing Wins Bronze Medal at Head of the Charles

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Louisville varsity rowing team competed against some of the nation's top programs Saturday and came away with a bronze medal at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
The event is the largest two-day rowing competition in the world.
The Cardinals completed the three-mile course in 17:29.55 to win the bronze in the Women's Collegiate Eight race, marking the second straight year the team has come home with a medal. Last year, U of L finished fourth in the Open Eight competition to win its first-ever medal at the prestigious event.
Lehigh University won the 34-team race with a time of 17:23.55, while West Virginia finished second in 17:28.49. The next fastest crew behind Louisville was the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, which finished 17 seconds behind the Cardinals.
"We knew we had the ability to do well here, but anything can happen at the Charles," said head coach Richard Ruggieri. "The team rowed aggressively and really came together. The third-place results should motivate us over the next few weeks since we had that taste of victory but just came up a little short."
U of L's lineup was junior Allison Kemphaus, senior Lucy Svehla, junior Leslie Walters, freshman Stephanie Hutton, senior Carmen Noltemeyer, senior Stephanie George, sophomore Brooke Spence and freshman Lisa Terreberry. The coxswain was sophomore Diana Golub.
Louisville returns to action Sunday when it travels to Elkhart, Ind., for the Head of the Elk.
