LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Having already won five gold medals through the first two regattas of the young fall season, the University of Louisville rowing team will look to continue its success Saturday as the Cardinals compete in the 38th Annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
The Head of the Charles, first held in 1965, is the world's largest two-day regatta. Today, the race includes over 6,000 athletes and attracts more than 300,000 spectators.
The Cardinals will compete in the Women's Collegiate Eight competition, which will begin at 4 p.m. The Cards' lineup will be junior Allison Kemphaus, senior Lucy Svehla, junior Leslie Walters, freshman Stephanie Hutton, senior Carmen Noltemeyer, senior Stephanie George, sophomore Brooke Spence and freshman Lisa Terreberry. The coxswain will be sophomore Diana Golub.
Last year, U of L placed fourth in the Club 8+ event, guaranteeing the Cards an entry in the race this year. The Cardinals finished the three-mile course with a time of 17:46.43, just one second behind the third-place crew and 15 seconds behind the winner in the 55-boat race.
"This is a huge event for rowing," said head coach Richard Ruggieri. "We have had a solid start this season, and hopefully we can continue to improve Saturday."
The Cardinals will be competing with some of the world's top programs, including the United States and Canadian national teams, 2002 NCAA champion Brown, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Michigan and Southern California.
