Paced co-medalist Ryan Gildersleeve, South Alabama extended its two-stroke lead after two rounds with a final-round 287 to claim a four-stroke victory over Coastal Carolina with a three-round, nine-under-par 855 at the U of L Cardinal Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Louisville. Gildersleeve (68-68-71), the clubhouse leader entering the day, earned co-medalist honors with Virginia Commonwealth's Ted Brown (68-69-70) with a nine-under 207 after the two played to a stalemate for seven playoff holes.
In addition to Gildersleeve's fine play, South Alabama (285-283-287) received strong performances from Gareth Maybin, who finished tied for seventh with a three-under 213 (72-72-69), and Josh Lampley, who finished tied for 17th with a one-over 217 (75-71-71), to finish the tournament with a nine-under 855.
Entering the final round tied for seventh and 13 shots off the pace, Louisville fired an even-par 288, the third-best score of the day and only a stroke off the pace set by South Alabama and Coastal Carolina, to finish fifth with a five-over par 869. Southern Miss (282-288-297) and Rhode Island (285-287-295) finished tied for third place with a three-over 867, besting the Cards by just two strokes.
Sophomores Mark Anderson and Brett Jones led the way for Louisville with final round 70s, while freshman Will Hanna carded an even-par 72 to close out his first collegiate event. Anderson's five-under-par 211 (69-72-70), was good enough for fourth-place and marked the best 54-hole finish of his collegiate career.
"I hit the ball extremely well over the past two days and I probably played the best tournament of my career from a mental standpoint," Anderson said. "I was struggling during the week, but I went out on Saturday and just played a relaxing and fun round with some of my teammates and that definitely helped me get back into the right flow of things."
Jones, the 2002 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, turned in another solid performance, carding a three-under 213 (72-71-70) to finish tied for seventh place. Making his collegiate debut, Hanna carded a four-over-par 220 (74-74-72) to finish tied for 28th-place.
Sophomore Charlie Woo, who has yet to regain the form that saw him capture two of Canada's biggest amateur events over the summer, finished tied for 45th-place with a nine-over 225 (75-74-76). Junior Matt Bascom carded a 17-over 233 (80-77-76) to finish tied for 69th, while sophomore Matthew Britt carded a 13-over-par 229 (76-78-76) while competing as an individual.
U of L head coach Mark Crabtree was pleased with the progress his team showed over the course of the event.
"I'm extremely happy with the way we played today, especially with the way that Anderson and Jones attacked the course," Crabtree said. "It was also nice to see Will Hanna come out and give us a solid performance in his first collegiate event.
"We've got some pieces of the puzzle fitting together nicely right now, we're just going to have to figure out who's going to step up and give us some consistent play in the third and fourth spots in the lineup before next week," Crabtree said, alluding to the tough field at the Rhode Island Invitational.
