Sophomores Mark Anderson and Brett Jones both finished among the top 30 players in a field which included eight of the nation's top 100 individual players, however, the duo's supporting cast could not come through in the final round as the University of Louisville golfers finished 14th out of 17 teams at the Barona Collegiate Cup presented by Callaway Golf and hosted by San Diego State University at the Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif.
Anderson, who entered the final round tied for 14th-place, six strokes off the pace with a three-under-par 141 (70-71), fell back with a two-over 74 on Tuesday to finish tied for 21st-place with a one-under 215. The Sioux Falls, S.D. native, who earlier this season logged a fourth-place finish at the U of L Cardinal Intercollegiate, is developing into a solid one-two punch with Jones, the 2002 Conference USA Freshman of the Year.
Coming off an impressive freshman campaign in which he ranked second on the team to school record-holder Grant Sturgeon with a 73.76 stroke average, Jones has been consistent early this season. The Paducah native logged three top 10 finishes in each of the season's first three events and managed to salvage a 27-place finish at the Barona Cup with a one-under 71 in Tuesday's final round to finish with a one-over 217 (72-74-71).
Playing in just his third collegiate event, Will Hanna, a freshman from The Woodlands, Tex., entered the final round at one-over with a two-round 145 (72-73), but fell the pace with a final-round 76 to finish tied for 50th at 221. Also showing promise playing in his first collegiate event was freshman Brent Holmes, who finished tied for 61st-place. The Glen Carbon, Ill., native also fired a final-round 76 after carding a 73 and 74 on the event's opening day.
Sophomore Charlie Woo continues to struggle to regain the swing which saw him claim victories in two of Canada's biggest amateur events over the summer as he finished tied for 74th-place with a three-round 227 (74-77-76).
U of L entered the final round tied with Nevada and Texas A&M for 11th-place at three-over-par 579, however, the Cards' final-round 297 dropped them back to 14th-place, 30 strokes off the pace set by champion and host school San Diego State (846).
The Cardinals will complete the fall season at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Tex., October 28-29.
