GREENSBORO, N.C, -- Senior Grant Sturgeon tied his own University of Louisville men's golf record, shooting a three-round total of 210 (-6) at the Mid-Pines Intercollegiate in Greensboro, N.C. Sturgeon's record-tying performance put him in a seventh-place tie with two other golfers as the Cardinals' finished sixth in the 14-team field.
U of L's team score of 860 (-4) smashes the program's old mark for a 54-hole tournament set at the EKU Classic in 1998 by five shots.
A native of Cave City, Ky., Sturgeon fired rounds of 69 and 68 to open the tournament but carded a one-over par 73 in the final round. Sturgeon's 210 matches his medalist performance a season ago at the San Diego State Invitational.
Freshman Brett Jones made quite a splash in his first collegiate tournament, posting a top 15 finish at 213 (-3). Jones opened the tournament with a blazing 67 but jumped to an even par 72 in Round 2 and a two-over 74 to complete the tourney at three-under par.
Classmate Mark Anderson carded three consecutive rounds of even par 72 to finish tied for 23rd place in his first collegiate appearance.
