Indianapolis, IN. - The Louisville Cardinal women's soccer team edged IUPUI 2-1 in the 2001 season opener Friday night in Indianapolis.
Freshman Leigh Carroll scored the game winner with just over ten minutes to play, breaking the 1-1 deadlock. Carroll added an assist on the first goal for the Cards in her first collegiate game.
"This was just a great team effort, and is the type of game, and the type of team that exemplifies where we want this program to be," said Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
Junior Melissa Wark put the Cards up 1-0 just nine minutes into her first Division one game, converting a corner off the foot of Carroll. Wark, an NJCAA All-American last season at Monroe Community College, scored 34 goals in her two years of junior college ball.
Louisville would carry that lead into the second half before the Jaguars evened things up at one with a goal by Sarah Leonard in the 60th minute.
Nineteen minutes later Carroll converted a free kick from 20 yards out for her first career goal.
"There were many occasions in the contest that the team could have become frustrated with some of the adversity they had to face, but they showed a lot of character in the win, " added Ferguson.
At one point in the second half, U of L was whistled for six fouls in just over six minutes leading up the tying goal. There were 39 fouls called in the match.
Louisville outshot the Jags 18-10. Wark and senior Amber Jolley paced the Cardinal attack with five shots apiece. Carroll added four.
Freshman goalkeeper Meredith Miller made four saves including two crucial stops in the first four minutes of the second half to pick up the win.
Louisville is 9-7-1 in season openers including wins in their last three.
The Cards will next face #2 UCLA in Champaign, Illinois on Friday, September 7th at 6:00p.m. The Bruins were the national runner-up last season.
U of L will open the home schedule on Sunday the 9th at Cardinal Park against Miami at 1:00p.m.
