HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Louisville softball team fell to Conference USA rival Southern Mississippi 4-3 Sunday in Hattiesburg.
The Cards jumped ahead quickly when Coleen Coughlin led off the game with a single, stole second and crossed the plate on Keola Calderon's double to give Louisville a 1-0 lead. Nikki Gaudio's solo home run, her second of the weekend, put the Cardinals up 2-0 in the second inning.
Southern Miss responded in the fourth when Robbi Robertson drew a walk to reach first, moved to second on Kenya Peters' single and scored on Channika Gant's double. Peters then scored on a wild pitch to tie the gameat two.
Louisville pulled ahead in the top of the fifth when Coughlin reach on a single, stole second, moved to third on Calderon's base hit and scored when Kenzie Meisenburg reached safely on a Southern Miss error to give the Cards a 3-2 advantage.
The Lady Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Melanie McMains led off the inning with a single, moved to second when Kristie Martin reached on a walk. McMains and Martin scored on Tammy Edwards' two-run double to give Southern Miss the 4-3 lead. The Lady Eagles improve to 42-18, (15-6 C-USA).
Southern Miss reliever Melissa Cundiff (16-9) picked up the win allowing one unearned run on two hits in four innings. Louisville reliever Mandy Rockwell (7-7) took the loss.
Offensively, the Cards were led by Coughlin who went two-for-four with two runs scored, and Calderon, who went two-for-three with an RBI.
Louisville (37-24, 12-9 C-USA) will serve as host for the 2001 Conference USA Softball Tournament presented by U of L Health Care May 10-12 at Ulmer Stadium.
