Mother Nature was the only winner Friday at Cardinal Stadium, as heavy rains and lightning suspended the completion of the first game of the Louisville vs. Tulane baseball series until Saturday. With Tulane leading 5-1 with no outs in the top of the seventh, the teams were sent to the dugouts at 7:35 p.m. At 8:10 p.m. lead umpire Mick Sharkey halted further play. The game will be resumed at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, and the game scheduled for 1:00 p.m. will be played one half hour after the completion of game one.
Prior to the storm, Tulane first baseman James Jurries supplied the prolific Green Wave offense with two two-run home runs.
Jurries homered to right in the first, scoring Andy Cannizaro to give the Green Wave a 2-0 lead. In the third, Tulane center fielder Jon Kaplan reached on a single, advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt, and scored on a passed ball to up the lead to 3-0.
Louisville got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when right fielder Bill Gatti Jr. blasted his third home run of the season over the bullpen in left field with one out, to make it a 3-1 Tulane lead.
The Green Wave responded with Jurries' second two-run longball of the game, this one to deep right center, scoring third baseman Jake Gautreau who reached on an error, upping the advantage to 5-1 Tulane before the delay.
Tulane is 43-8 overall and ranked sixth in the nation with a national best 14-game winning streak. They are 19-5 in Conference USA play, and tied for first place. Louisville is 30-25 overall with a 12-12 conference mark, putting them in a tie for fifth with Memphis.
