
Softball Splits with Saint Louis

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville softball team split with Saint Louis, winning the first 3-1 and losing the second game 5-4 in Conference USA action Saturday at Ulmer Stadium.
Louisville is now 31-13 overall and 6-2 in the league. Saint Louis posts a 16-18 mark and is 2-6 in C-USA play.
"We had some timely hitting but our defense was not as sharp as it could be," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall.
In the first game, U of L pitcher Tara McClure pitched a complete game win allowing just one run which was unearned to boost her season record to 13-3. Kristi Rozelle went two for three with an RBI to lead the Cards. Rightfielder Keola Calderon scored two of U of L's three runs.
In the second game, the Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three ininings. Kenzie Meisenburg had a two-RBI double to score Coleen Coughlin and Val Smith.
Saint Louis answered in the fourth with a pair of runs and added aother run in the fifth when Beth Yagge had an RBI single to score Erin Jeffrey.
Louisville took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Coughlin led off with a single and Calderon doubled. A sacrifice fly by Melissa Jacobo scored Coughlin and then Calderon scored on a single by Candi Padilla.
"At that point I was very pleased how offensively we answered to take the lead back," said Pearsall.
However, Saint Louis scored two in the top of the seventh and the Cardinals were unable to muster the hits in the bottom of the seventh.
Jessica Rak took the loss for the Cardinals, giving up eight hits and five runs, three of which were unearned.
The Cardinals play the rubber match of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
