DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Louisville women's rowing team made history Sunday when the Varsity 4+ squad defeated the University of Dayton to record the program's first-ever victory in the event.
The Cardinals, who are in their first season at the varsity level after a year of competition as novices last season, finished with a time of 7:24.26, nearly 15 seconds ahead of the Flyers' top crew.
Members of the history-making team were freshmen Christy Ochsner (coxswain) and Nicole Ginn, and sophomores Kate O'Bryan, Melissa Campbell and Kris Pittman.
In other races at Dayton, the Cardinals placed second out of three teams in the Varsity 8+ race with a time of 6:37.52 and were edged by just .51 seconds in the Novice 8+ event to again finish second of three.
"We have identified a few areas where we can improve so that we can race at our full potential," said head coach Richard Ruggieri. "The challenge is in place as we strive to do our best with new lineups and race strategies."
The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they travel to Knoxville to race the University of Tennessee.
