Softball Goes 2-1 on Second Day of Capital Classic

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Louisville softball team recorded its tenth shutout of the season, defeating Texas A&M Corpus Christi 8-0 in six innings, defeated host Sacramento State 12-7 and fell to New Mexico 6-1 Friday at the Capital Classic Softball Tournament.
In the first game of the day against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, the Cards jumped on the board early in the first inning as Kenzie Meisenburg singled to reach first, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Candi Padilla reached on an Islander error.
Louisville put up a three-spot in the second inning as Val Smith drew a walk to reach base, moved to second on Coleen Coughlin's fielder's choice and moved to third on Kenzie Meisenburg's single, which loaded the bases. Keola Calderon's three-run triple gave U of L a 4-0 lead.
The Cardinals scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Christina Soto led off the inning with a base hit to center. Kristi Rozelle entered the game as a pinch runner and moved to third when Val Smith singled and advanced to second the throw. Rozelle scored when Coughlin doubled down the left field line to make the score 5-0. Meisenburg reached first on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Smith scored when Calderon reached on a fielder's choice to make the score 6-0. Candi Padilla's double brought in Coughlin and Meisenburg to give Louisville the 8-0 win on the eight-run rule.
Louisville starter Tara McClure (7-1) recorded her fourth shutout of the season, scattering three hits over seven innings and striking out eight. Offensively for the Cards, Meisenburg went two-for-four with three runs scored. Nicole Sparks went two-for-three. Coughlin went one-for-four with two runs scored and an RBI. Calderon went one-for-four with a triple and four RBI and Padilla went one-for-four with a double and three RBI.
In their second game of the day, the Cardinals used 17 hits to defeat tournament host Sacramento State 12-7.
U of L got on the board in the top of the first when Kenzie Meisenburg reached on a Sac State error, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third when Keola Calderon grounded out to the shortstop and scored on another Sac State error to give the Cards a 1-0 lead.
The Hornets responded in the bottom of the first when Meghan Cunningham , Amber Dragomir and Jillian Bivert each drew walks to load the bases. Cunningham and Dragomir scored on a Louisville error to give Sac State a 2-1 lead.
Louisville answered in the third when Meisenburg doubled, then moved to third on Calderon's single. Both Meisenburg and Calderon scored on Candi Padilla's double to give the Cards a 3-2 lead.
Sac State tied the game in the bottom of the third on Patty Villa's solo homerun.
U of L put up a three-spot in the fifth inning when Padilla led off with a triple and Jacobo drew a walk. Padilla and Jacobo scored on Sparks' double. Sparks scored on Nikki Gaudio's stand up double to make the score 6-3. In the bottom of the fifth, Sac State responded with two runs to make the score 6-5.
The Cards scored five runs in the sixth inning on five hits. Meisenburg, Calderon, Padilla, McMillan and Rozelle crossed the plate to make the score 11-5.
In the seventh, Louisville put up one more run as Padilla led off with a triple and scored on Lisa McMillan's single. Sac State scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh for a final score of 12-7.
The Cards were led offensively by Padilla, who went four-for-five with two triples, and a double, three runs scored and four RBI.
Louisville reliever Jessica Rak (6-4) got the win, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out four in seven innings played.
In the nightcap, Louisville lost for the first time in the Capital Classic when they fell 6-1 to New Mexico. The Lobos took an early lead in the top of the second inning when Kelly Glass drew a walk to reach first, stole second, and scored on Tiffani Chambers' single to left center to make the score 1-0.
New Mexico pulled ahead 2-0 in the fifth inning when Cayley Warner led off with a base hit, stole second, moved to third on Sabrina Sandberg's bunt single and scored on Elena Cranmer's sacrifice fly.
Louisville struck in the bottom of the fifth when Christina Soto led off with a single to center, moved to second on Val Smith's sacrifice bunt, advanced to third when Coleen Coughlin grounded out to the shortstop and crossed the plate on Kenzie Meisenburg's infield single.
The Lobos added an insurance run in the top half of the sixth when Kathy Moore's solo homer put them ahead 3-1. They added three more runs in the seventh when Moore hit her second homerun of the day, a three-run shot to left field to give New Mexico the 6-1 win.
U of L starter Tara McClure (7-2) took the loss, allowing one earned run on two hits and striking out four in four innings pitched.
Louisville (19-9) will enter into double-elimination bracket play against Sacramento State Saturday at noon EST.
