
Softball Shuts Out Western Illinois

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The University of Louisville softball team defeated Western Illinois 2-0 in the second game of the Metrodome Softball Classic on Thursday.
The Cards scored early in the bottom of the first inning when sophomore Keola Calderon reached base on a walk and scored on sophomore Melissa Jacobo's double to right field.
Senior Val Smith added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning when she singled to reach first, moved to third on senior Coleen Coughlin's sacrifice bunt and an error and scored on Calderon's single to center field.
Sophomore starter Jessica Rak (1-0) notched a two-hit shutout and struck out six.
"Overall, it was a good start for us," said Louisville head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We executed a lot of things well, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us."
U of L (2-0) will play Northern Iowa at noon and then take host Minnesota at 8 pm. on Friday.
