Ohio Wins MAC Field Hockey Championship

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Ohio University, the Mid-American Conference's regular champion became the MAC tournament champion by defeating Kent State 3-2 on Sunday at Louisville's Trager Stadium. The Bobcats earned the MAC automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The game featured the league's No. 1 seed, Ohio and the No. 2 seed Kent State and was a rematch of last year's MAC Championship final which Kent State won 3-0.
Ohio scored early in the first half, when Andrea Voros connected on a penalty corner with assists from Kristin Auge and Lauren Mazziotto to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead six minutes into the game.
Kent State's Arlette van Cleeff tied the game when she nailed a penalty stroke with 2:49 remaining in the first half. The teams went into halftime with the score tied at 1-1.
Ohio pulled ahead again six minutes into the second half when Auge scored on a feed from Voros to give her team a 2-1 advantage.
The Golden Flashes quickly responded when van Cleeff dribbled the ball into the circle and posted an unassisted goal at the 29:19 mark for her second score of the game.
The Bobcats' Mazziotto recorded the game-winning goal off of an assist from Andrea Voros with 6:31 remaining to give Ohio the 3-2 win.
The game was an evenly matched contest. Ohio outshot Kent State 19-17 and held a 14-11 penalty corner advantage.
Kent State's van Cleeff finished the game with two goals. KSU's goalkeeper, Jodi Lume had 12 saves in the game. The Golden Flashes fall to 13-7 (8-2).
Offensively for Ohio, Voros finished the game with a goal and two assists, Auge had a goal and an assist and Mazziotto also had a goal and an assist. Ohio's goalkeeper, Tara Elliot had six stops for the Bobcats. Ohio (16-4, 9-1 MAC) earned its first bid to the NCAA tournament.
