At the completion of one day of play, two University of Louisville doubles teams and four singles players advanced to the second round in their divisions in the U of L Fall Invitational at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on Friday.
The doubles team of Alex Sivertsen and Matt Mayer defeated Peter Bong and Richard Booth 8-5 in the first round of the "A" doubles draw, while Brent McCombe and Sebastian Aspillaga combined to beat Austin Peay's Wes Pancho and Marcus Rutsche 8-4 in the "B" division. Louisville's Mark Kennedy teamed with Ball State's Michael Heule to top Dayton's Derek Grannen and Ben Kathary 8-6 in the "B" division.
In flight "A"singles action, Sivertsen defeated Southern Indiana's Paulus Halim 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, while Aspillaga also went three sets with his 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Wright State's Chad Derry. U of L's Brent McCombe fell to Toledo's Dipesh Rao 6-4, 6-4. In "B" singles, top-seeded Mayer defeated Brad Nykiel 6-1, 7-6(4). Kennedy clinched another win for Louisville with his 7-5, 7-6 win over Chad Andrews of Saint Louis in the "C" draw.
Heavy rain forced the consolation rounds singles matches to be postponed. The consolation draw will be played Saturday. The tournament will begin Saturday morning at 8:30 with a round of doubles matches.
"I'm pleased to win seven of eight matches today," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We dominated the Louisville Invitational last year, but have a tough task tomorrow against players from Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Indiana. This will be a good early test, which will show us the true level of our play."
