LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville field hockey team is ranked No. 17 in the 2000 STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Coaches Poll. This marks the first time in program history that U of L field hockey has been ranked in the NFHCA top 20.
The Cardinals are currently 3-2 overall. They began the season with a 2-1 win over 1999 Final Four participant Iowa, which finished ranked No. 3 in the nation. U of L's win total also includes victories over Providence and Saint Louis. Their two losses came in overtime against No. 8 Connecticut and No. 16 Boston University.
"It's a milestone for our program," said head coach Pam Bustin. "Even though it's early in the season, and we know we still have a lot to do, the team has really worked hard to get to this point. It is a credit to the university, not just the field hockey program."
"I am very excited," said Louisville Athletic Director Tom Jurich. "This is one of the best turn-arounds I've had in my experience in sports. It is a tribute to Pam Bustin, her staff and the type of student-athletes we have here at the University of Louisville."
U of L will travel to Evanston, Ill. this weekend, where the Cardinals will face Villanova on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. They will take on Northwestern on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
