Louisville, Ky. - Kelly McClain had 11 kills and two aces to lead the University of Louisville to a three-game sweep of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in the Cardinals volleyball home opener last night in Cardinal Arena.
The Cardinals won 15-11, 15-6, 15-1 to start the season at 1-0.
UMKC, coached by former U of L assistant coach Steve Dallman, fell to 0-1. In the first match of the Louisville International Tournament, Dayton defeated the University of Western Ontario 3-0 in an exhibition match.
"This could have been a tricky game, because Steve certainly knows our system and we have a new lineup and new leadership," said Leonid Yelin, head coach. "We were able to meshwell though."
The Cardinals hit .222 as a team, led by McClain's .391. Middle blocker Lesley Drury had seven kills on 12 swings to hit .333.
"Lesley is looking good right now. Her timing is on and Jing is able to set the middle more frequently because of our strong passing. She also had a pair of aces," said Yelin.
Newcomers to the starting lineup, Bing Sun of Beijing, China and Anastasia Zaitseva of Moscow, Russia combined for five kills and nine blocks.
UMKC was led by Julie Mohrfield's 10 kills and two blocks.
The Louisville International Volleyball Tournament continues tomorrow at 11 a.m. when Canada plays UMKC. Louisville plays Dayton at 1 p.m. and UMKC takes on Dayton at 4:30 all in Cardinal Arena.
