Cardinal Rowers Win Two Golds At Head Of The Elk

ELKHART, Ind. - The University of Louisville women's rowing team made history again by winning two gold medals and a silver Sunday at the Head of the Elk Regatta. The 2.5 mile races were held on the Upper St. Joseph's River in Elkhart, Ind.
"We are coming off an extremely difficult week," said U of L head coach Julio Viyella. "We could not have asked for a better time to win our first gold medal."
The Cardinals opened the day with a gold in the Women's Novice 8+ C. U of L won the eight-crew race with a time of 16:17.16, edging second-place finisher Michigan State by nearly 17 seconds.
U of L won its second gold medal of the day in the Women's Novice 8+ A race. The Cardinals came in at 15:21.54, again edging out Michigan State (15:23.06) for the victory in the 13-crew event.
In the Women's Open 4+, the Cardinals won a silver medal with a time of 15:57.02. MSU "A" won the 33-team race with a time of 15:48.50.
The Cards placed fifth in the Women's Novice 8+ B race with a time of 16:55.03 to round out the day.
"The girls showed a lot of fire out there," said Viyella. "I am proud of each and every one of them."
U of L will finish its fall schedule next Saturday at the Head of the Chattahoochee in Gainesville, Ga.
