GAINESVILLE, Ga. - The University of Louisville women's rowing team wrapped up its first fall season of intercollegiate competition by winning a gold and two silver medals at the Head of the Chattahoochee Regatta in Gainesville, Ga., Saturday.
"We are proud to say that we have had a very successful fall season," said U of L head coach Julio Viyella. "We were looking to start out with a bang this fall, and that we did. There is no question about it."
The Cardinals won a gold medal in the Women's Freshman Novice 4+ with a time of 21:51.6, nearly one minute faster than second-place finisher Texas and almost two minutes faster than third-place Duke in the 12-crew event.
U of L earned a pair of silver medals with second-place finishes in the Women's Freshman Novice 8+ and the Women's Collegiate and Club Novice 4+ events. In the 14-crew Novice 8+ race, the Cards finished with a time of 19:47.8, narrowly being edged by Duke (19:39.1) by eight seconds.
In the Novice 4+, the Cardinal crew finished in 23:31.4, again being edged by Duke, this time by only seven seconds. A second U of L crew placed eighth in the 31-crew race with a time of 25:01.8.
The Cards also placed fourth out of 34 in the Women's Collegiate and Club Novice 8+ with a time of 22:00.6. Duke won the race in 21:25.6.
"We are coming out of the water for the fall season after a good number of successful races," said Viyella. "Every rower has experienced a taste of the competition, and they are all anxious to take back to the water in the spring."
U of L won three gold and five silver medals in four regattas during the program's inaugural fall season. The Cards will return to action February 12 in Cincinnati, Ohio, for the Indoor Rowing Championships.
