CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The University of Louisville women's rowing team made its national debut over the weekend at the Head of the Charles Regatta and came away with a 23rd-place showing in the Youth 8 race. The event, the world's largest two-day rowing race in the world, consisted of more than 6,300 competitors.
The Cardinals finished with a ninth-place time of 18:30.31, but were penalized one minute for clashing blades, which dropped them down to 23rd. Radcliffe Crew won the 43-team event with a time of 17:51.10.
Freshmen Laura Scherberger, Melissa Campbell, Sheila Cornelius, Jennifer Klipple, Blaire Steinert, Kristin Pittman, Michelle Fendrick and Jessica Donohue provided the thrust for the Cardinals.
"I am absolutely proud of the way the crew rowed," said Viyella. "They rowed a very strong and aggressive race, and they were significantly faster than last week's inaugural competition. This just gives me and the crew more confidence as we complete our fall schedule and head into the spring."
"Our performance this weekend just showed everyone there that the University of Louisville rowing team is for real and is here to stay," said Viyella.
