MADISON, Wis. - The University of Louisville women's rowing team took advantage of beautiful racing conditions and won a silver and a bronze medal Saturday at the Midwest Rowing Championships.
The event was held on Lake Wingra in Madison, Wis.
In the Freshman/Novice 8+ event, the Cardinals placed second out of 20 total boats. Louisville finished the 2000m race in 6:30.57, just 1.37 seconds behind race winner and perennial power Wisconsin. Notre Dame (6:33.39) was third, followed by Kansas, Wisconsin Lightweight and Texas. U of L qualified for the grand final by placing second in the morning heat.
In the Freshman/Novice 8+ B event, U of L placed third out of nine with a time of 6:38.36. Wisconsin won the race in 6:27.89 and Kansas was second in 6:34.69. Texas, Notre Dame and the Wisconsin Lightweight boat placed fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Cardinals won the 3rd level final in the Freshman/Novice 4+ event in 8:01.51, edging out Lawrence by 13 seconds. U of L placed 13th overall out of 20 in the race.
"Again, I am extremely proud of our team and with the hardware we are bringing home," said U of L head coach Julio Viyella. "Both of our eight's have become true racers, not just rowers. All three teams went to war out there, executed their race plans and came off the water with something to build on for our last regatta of the year. This was definitely a good way to go into the bye week."
The Cardinals will take a weekend off before traveling to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the NCAA Central Region Championship on May 13. The Central Championships will be the final regatta for the Cards in their inaugural rowing season.
