Matt Wernecke was hired as an assistant coach for the Cardinals in June 2020.
The long-time successful high school coach was instrumental in guiding the Cardinals to their best finish in the postseason by placing ninth at the NCAA Championship in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Wernecke assisted the Cardinals to a fourth-place finish at the Noblesville Regional as the Cards were able to advance to the NCAA Championship for the fifth time in school history behind a veteran group of seniors.Â
In his first season, Wernecke saw the Cardinals, make their sixth post-season appearance in the last eight years and earn a bid to the postseason after posting three top-five finishes in the spring, including a third at the General Hackler Championship. Â
Wernecke joins the Cardinals after spending 11 seasons as the head coach of the boys' and girls' golf programs at Vandegrift High School in Austin, Texas.
In his 11 seasons heading both programs, Wernecke was one of the most successful coaches in the state of Texas. He guided his teams to 11 state championship appearances, winning three consecutive state championships in 2014-16, and being named the 2016 State Coach of the Year by the National Federation of High School coaches.

His boys' teams also posted state runners-up finishes during the 2018 and 2019 campaigns, while also placing third in 2013 and 2016.

Collectively, his teams won 23 team championships and recorded 25 individual champions, while sending 18 players on to play collegiate golf.

As the leader of the girls program, he guided his teams to five appearances in the state championships, earning runners-up honors in 2016 and a third-place finish in 2015.
During his tenure coaching the girls, his teams won 24 team titles, recorded six individual champions and had 11 players continue their careers in collegiate golf.
As a player, Wernecke was a four-year letterwinner at Sam Houston State men's golf team, where graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology in 2001.

A native of Austin, Texas, Wernecke is married to Amy Willis and the couple has three daughters: Avery, Masyn, and Evy.
