May 14, 2025 | Men's Golf
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's golf team made a run at qualifying for the NCAA Men's Golf Championship with a remarkable front nine but came up short in the end to finish in a tie for seventh at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional Wednesday at the Seminole Legacy Golf Club.
The Cardinals finished six shots from the fifth spot, which would have sent the Cards to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2021. Louisville tied with San Diego State for seventh while USC was sixth at 2-over-par.
After combining for a score of 7-over-par after the first 36 holes, the Cardinals carded a 4-under-par on Wednesday.
Florida State (-29), Mississippi (-20), New Mexico (-14), Georgia (-7), and Augusta (-3) have all advanced to the championships, which begin next week in Carlsbad, Calif.
Entering the day eight shots off the qualifying spot, the Cards raced out by shooting 9-under-par on the front nine with 11 birdies and a pair of eagles to get as high as fifth.
However, the back nine wasn't as kind as the Cardinals fell out of contention late in the round by shooting 8-over-par.
Cooper Claycomb posted a top 20 finish by placing 19th after shooting a 1-under-par 215. He posted one of the best rounds of the day by carding a 3-under-par 69. The sophomore started by shooting 4-under-par through the first four holes and shot a 5-under-par 31 on the front.
Brady Smith was solid with a 3-under-par 69 to end the tournament in a tie for 45th place after closing the regional with a three-day total of 223 (+7). The newcomer shot a 3-under-par on the front with three birdies on the final four holes.
Sebastian Moss' remarkable career came to an end after he shot 73 on Wednesday and ended the tournament at even-par and in 23rd place. He ends his career with five career victories.
Easton Johnson closed the regional in 30th place after his final round of 75, and finished the regional with a 218.
Warren Thomis finished with a final round of 73 after his second-round score of 75.
The Cardinals are expected to return seven players from the 2024-25 roster.
