Strong defensive effort leads Louisville to its second straight top-15 win
PHILADELPHIA – The University of Louisville defeated No. 15 Saint Joseph's 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Ellen Ryan Field.
"Our team is ecstatic to get the win on the road today against a very good and well-coached Saint Joseph's team," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We had a great first quarter where we were able to capitalize on two penalty corners. The next three quarters were dominated by our opponent and we couldn't get anything going."
Annabel Sep and Tyler Everslage registered goals while goalkeeper Emily Young helped key Louisville's defensive effort with seven saves to earn the Cardinals' second shutout of the season.
The Cardinals (5-3) struck early in the first quarter after earning their first penalty corner of the contest. Gracie Potter got the play started and Rylie Wollerton provided the stop for Sep who delivered her fourth goal of the season.
Louisville added another penalty corner goal in the closing minutes of the second quarter. This time, Everslage connected on a feed from Lauren Masters for her first goal of the season.
The Cards took the 2-0 lead into halftime despite the Hawks owning a 10-4 edge in shots and an 8-2 advantage in penalty corners.
After the break, St. Joseph's (4-3) intensified its attack, outshooting Louisville by a margin of 8-4 and holding a 5-2 edge in corners. The Hawks lifted goalkeeper Paige Kieft in favor of an extra field player with 5:43 left to play in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals' defense held strong. The win marks the second straight for the Cardinals over a top-15 opponent following Friday's 3-2 victory over No. 14 Ohio State.
"Our defensive unit in the circle and on penalty corners were simply outstanding," said Sowry. "Our individual defense was not up to par and we will be focusing on that as we move into the ACC play. We certainly cannot complain about getting two wins this weekend, but will still have plenty to work on."
The Cardinals will return to action on Sept. 26 when they travel to Palo Alto, Calif., to open Atlantic Coast Conference play against Stanford.
