Men's Track & Field Begins Competition at NCAA Outdoor Championships

KJ Byrd and Paul Kallenberg wrapped up the first day of the men’s decathlon in ninth and 10th in the overall standings, and Geoffrey Kirwa advanced to the men’s 3000m steeplechase final.
EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Louisville men's track & field team concluded their first of four days of action at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Wednesday, as a trio of Cardinals began their week at Hayward Field to get the competition underway.
KJ Byrd and Paul Kallenberg got the meet started for the Cards by competing in the first five events of the men's decathlon, as the pair both rank among the top 10 after the first day of competition.
Competing at his first NCAA Outdoor Championships, Byrd sits ninth after the first day with 4,033 points after posting a 100m time of 10.97, a mark of 7.10m (23-3.5) in the long jump, a toss of 12.32m (40-5) in the shot put, a clearance of 2.04m (6-8.25) in the high jump, and a 400m time of 48.98.
Kallenberg ranks close behind with 4,023 points to hold 10th place through the first five events with marks of 10.91 in the 100m, 6.87m (22-6.5) in the long jump, 14.82m (48-7.5) in the shot put, 1.89m (6-2.25) in the high jump and 48.72 in the 400m.
The men's decathlon will continue tomorrow at 12:45 p.m. ET with Byrd and Kallenberg set to compete in the 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and 1500m.
In the men's 3000m steeplechase semifinals, Geoffrey Kirwa expertly navigated a tactical heat to cross the line in 8:31.42, punching his ticket to the NCAA final, which will take place on Friday at 8:24 p.m. ET.
The freshman, who boasts the top time in the NCAA thus far this season and the second-fastest time in collegiate history with his mark of 8:13.89 that he recorded at the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 16, will toe the line on Friday as part of a stacked field with a chance to etch his name into Louisville history as a national champion.
Tomorrow, the Cards will field six athletes in five events with the beginning of the women's competition and the continuation of the men's decathlon. The full schedule of events for Louisville athletes for Thursday can be found below.
