Paul Kallenberg, Jayden Ulrich Claim ACC Titles on Second Day of ACC Outdoor Championships
May 16, 2025 | Track & Field
Kallenberg shattered the program record to win the men’s decathlon, while Ulrich won her second straight outdoor ACC title in the women’s shot put.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University of Louisville track & field teams concluded the second day of competition at the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday, capturing a pair of conference titles and breaking three program records in the process.
Through the first two days of competition, both the Louisville men and women have surpassed their point total from the 2024 ACC Outdoor Championships, as the women's squad holds the lead with 44 points and the men's squad sits in third with 37.33 points going into the final day of the championship meet.
The highlight of the day for the Cardinals came in the men's decathlon, as Paul Kallenberg captured the second ACC title of his career in the event and KJ Byrd finished as the runner-up, securing 18 points for the Louisville men.
Kallenberg shattered the school record with a personal-best point total of 7,944 points, eclipsing Joe Delgado's score of 7,852 points that had stood since 2018, while Byrd bettered his own freshman record by 500 points with a final tally of 7,849 points to continue his incredible freshman campaign. The pair now rank fourth and fifth nationally, respectively, among decathlon marks entering the weekend, putting them in prime position to qualify for June's NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Jayden Ulrich also earned a gold medal in the women's shot put for the second consecutive season, recording a toss of 17.56m (57-7.5) that outpaced the rest of the competition by nearly a full meter. The senior will look to replicate her double-championship performance from last season tomorrow afternoon when she contests the women's discus throw at 5:00 p.m. ET.
On the track, Layla Roebke notched a second-place finish in the women's 3000m steeplechase in 9:54.20 to move up to 12th nationally while also crushing her own school record of 9:58.76 that she set on April 12 at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
The Cardinals also got a pair of All-ACC performances in the women's long jump, as Synclair Savage finished as the runner-up with a mark of 6.41m (21-0.5) and Sophia Day placed fifth after leaping 6.03m (19-9.5). With the podium finish, Savage earned First Team All-ACC distinction for the sixth time in her career, while Day continued her breakout season in the long jump pit by eclipsing the six-meter barrier for the fifth time in five meets this season.
In the men's shot put, Noah Koch pulled off a shocker, securing second place in the event after coming into the competition seeded seventh, recording a personal-best toss of 18.44m (60-6) that moves him up to fourth in program history and putting up big points for the Cards.
Lucas Couron also earned his way onto the podium, clearing a final bar of 5.31m (17-5) in the men's pole vault to clinch a share of the silver medal in a three-way tie for second.
After setting a new program record in the women's heptathlon just two weeks earlier at the Jim Freeman/Clark Wood Invitational, Lucy Fellows claimed the bronze medal in the event after accruing 5,603 points and recording personal-bests in four of the seven events.
Kiyah Yeast closed out the banner day for the Cardinals by breaking her second school record in two days, advancing to the finals in the women's 100m with a time of 11.35 that bests the previous record of 11.44 that was set in 2018 by Brooke Raglin. The graduate student will contest both the 100m and 200m finals tomorrow evening after posting the second-fastest 200m prelim time and the third-fastest time in the 100m prelims.
The third and final day of competition will get underway for the Cards at 2:00 p.m. ET with the men's discus throw and women's high jump, while track events are set to begin with the women's 4x100m relay at 5:30 p.m. ET.
The full schedule of events can be found here, while the link to live results for the meet can be found here. Competition will be streamed on ACCNX.
