Cards Close Out First Day of ACC Outdoor Championships
May 15, 2025 | Track & Field
Ashley Callahan finished as the runner-up in the women’s pole vault, while Geoffrey Kirwa placed fourth in the men’s 10000m.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University of Louisville track & field teams closed out the first of three days of competition at the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday.
Through three events, the Louisville women are in sixth place in the team standings with eight points while the men's squad sits in a tie for 10th with five points.
Ashley Callahan led the way for the Cards, finishing as the ACC runner-up in the women's pole vault with a personal-best mark of 4.42m (14-6) that moves her into sole possession of second in program history. The junior cleared her final attempt at the height to move up from fifth to second, making it six straight years that the Cards have posted a podium finish in the women's pole vault at the ACC Outdoor Championships.
In the men's 10000m, Geoffrey Kirwa earned Second Team All-ACC honors with a fourth-place finish, crossing the line in 29:04.91 after leading the pack for the majority of the race in his first collegiate appearance at the distance.
Kiyah Yeast punched her ticket to Saturday's final in the women's 200m, setting a new program record of 23.08 that stood as the second-fastest time in the preliminary round. The time edged her previous record of 23.09 that the graduate student set at the Jim Freeman/Clark Wood Invitational on April 25.
The Cards also saw a dominant showing by both KJ Byrd and Paul Kallenberg in the men's decathlon, as Byrd holds the lead through the first five events of the competition with 4,209 points and Kallenberg ranks close behind in third with 4,117 points.
Byrd recorded personal-best marks in four of the five events on Friday, notably clearing a bar of 2.13m (6-11.75) to lead all competitors and knocking over a second off his previous best in the 400m with a 48.89. The freshman also set new bests in the long jump with a leap of 7.31m (23-11.75) and the shot put with a mark of 12.64m (41-5.75) to put himself in prime position entering the latter half of the decathlon.
Kallenberg put together a solid day of his own, staking his claim to third place in the overall standings with the second-best shot put mark in the field of 14.43m (47-4.25) and a personal-best 400m time of 48.36.
The decathlon will roll on tomorrow with the 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500m remaining, with action set to begin at 11:00 a.m. ET.
In the women's heptathlon, Lucy Fellows ranks third with 3,399 points after the first four events of the competition. The sophomore continued her recent hot streak with personal-best marks in three of the four events, clocking a 100m hurdles time of 14.27, recording a toss of 12.83m (42-1.25), and racing to a 200m time of 24.35.
The heptathlon will conclude tomorrow with the long jump, javelin throw and 800m, with the competition set to resume at 12:30 p.m. ET.
Along with the continuation of the decathlon and heptathlon, field events will begin tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. ET with the women's long jump, while track events are set to get underway for the Cardinals at 7:05 p.m. ET with the preliminary round of the women's 100m.
