April 08, 2025 | Track & Field
Byrd made his collegiate debut in the decathlon last weekend, setting a new Louisville freshman record with a total of 7,349 points, the 10th-best mark in the NCAA this season.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – University of Louisville track & field freshman KJ Byrd has been named the ACC Men's Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Last weekend at the Jim Click Shootout & Multis in Tucson, Ariz., Byrd made his first appearance in the decathlon at the collegiate level, finishing third with a total of 7,349 points that currently ranks him fourth in the ACC and 10th in the NCAA thus far this season.
The point total stands as a new Louisville freshman record in the decathlon by nearly 300 points while also moving him up to third in program history in the event.
Over the course of the weekend, Byrd posted top-three finishes among the decathletes in five of the 10 events, notably recording the top mark in the field in the high jump with a clearance of 2.03m (6-7.75).
The 2025 ACC Men's Indoor Freshman of the Year also leapt into the top 10 in the Louisville record books in a pair of individual events in Tucson, recording a 110m hurdles time of 14.87 that ranks seventh in school history and a mark of 4.90m (16-0.75) in the pole vault that ties him for 10th.
With the honor, Byrd becomes the first Louisville male ever to win ACC Outdoor Freshman of the Week honors and gives him the fourth ACC weekly award of his young career, having earned ACC Men's Indoor Freshman of the Week honors on January 21 before earning both ACC Men's Indoor Field Athlete and Freshman of the Week on February 4.
The Cardinals return to action later this week when a select group of throwers travel to Ramona, Okla. for the Oklahoma Throws Series on April 10 and 12.
