Cardinals Close First Day of Action at NCAA Indoor Championships

Freshman KJ Byrd sits eighth in the men’s heptathlon standings through the first four events of the competition.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The University of Louisville track & teams closed the first day of competition at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
KJ Byrd kicked off the day for the Cards to officially make his postseason debut, accumulating 3,135 points through the first four events of the men's heptathlon to close the first day of competition in eighth place.
The freshman began his day with a time of 7.10m in the 60m before posting the fourth-best long jump mark in the field with a leap of 7.23m (23-8.75). Byrd then set a personal record in the shot put with a toss of 12.60m (41-4.25) and cleared a final bar of 1.97m (6-5.5) in the high jump to cap off Friday's events.
Natalie Lark also made her first career appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships, earning Honorable Mention All-American distinction in the women's pole vault to close a record-breaking indoor campaign.
The second and final day of competition will see Byrd return for the final three events of the men's heptathlon with the 60m hurdles set for 9:30 a.m. ET, the pole vault scheduled for 10:30 a.m. ET, and the men's 1000m slated to conclude the competition at 2:30 p.m. ET.
In addition to the remainder of the men's heptathlon, the Cards will also be represented in the women's shot put when Jayden Ulrich steps into the ring at 1:45 p.m. ET, as the senior will look to improve off her sixth-place finish in the event from a year ago.
