El Amine, Steinbach take away wins as Cards fall 5-2 to the Golden Bears
BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team dropped Thursday's midday match to ACC newcomer No. 15 California by a final score of 5-2.Â
No. 15 California 5, Louisville 2
No. 15 Cal (10-2, 3-2 ACC) claimed the doubles point quickly into the competition, taking Court 1 and Court 2 with an identical score of 6-1. Court 3 was abandoned at 4-2.Â
The Golden Bears overpowered the Cards early on in singles competition, taking down Louisville's four then five courts.Â
Sophomore Hamza El Amine was the first Card to finish, earning a hard-fought 6-2, 6-3 victory over Alex Aney on Court 6. It marked his fifth singles win of the season.Â
No. 36 Theo Dean clinched the victory for Cal with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Will Mayew. Next to fall was Natan Rodrigues on Court 1 by a score of 6-1, 7-5 to No. 49 Alex Chang.Â
Andre' Steinbach rounded out the competition with a two-set victory where both sets were decided by tiebreakers. He defeated Timofey Stepanov 7-6(7-4), 7-6(7-4) on Court 3 to bring the final score to 5-2.Â
Louisville (6-11, 0-5 ACC) will remain on the west coast, heading to Stanford for a Saturday match with first serve scheduled for 8:30 p.m. E.T.Â
