Louisville stays undefeated at home with 18 made 3’s on the day
LOUISVILLE, Ky - The No. 11-ranked University of Louisville men's basketball team lit up the scoreboard on Saturday with a 99-73 victory against the Memphis Tigers at the KFC Yum! Center.
Â
Louisville had six players hit from deep, the first time that has happened since Dec. 20, 2010, when the Cards played at Western Kentucky. This was also the first time since Nov. 22, 2010, that four Louisville players made at least three 3-point field goals.
Â
In addition to hosting Memphis, Louisville also honored the 50th anniversary of its 1975 Final Four team and held a jersey retirement ceremony for the Timeless #10, a 1975 team member and Louisville legend, Junior Bridgeman.
"I challenged our fans and they responded, man," said head coach Pat Kelsey. "They responded. I thought the atmosphere was awesome. Awesome. There were moments in the game where it got really loud at the right time. It was awesome. There was juice in the building, man… Special, special day honoring the 1975 Final Four team, retiring the jersey of one of the greatest citizens in the history of our city. One of the great players to ever play here. One of the most deserving banners to live up in the rafters of the Yum! Center forever and ever. I talked about Junior the other day in my press conference – the role model, the example that he is for every Card player that ever puts on a jersey. The way he represented that jersey when he played here and the way he represented that jersey when he finished his playing career and went into the professional world and the way he impacted so many people in so many ways and left an unbelievable legacy. It was kind of cool that we got to do it on a day where we played Memphis because of the past rivalry and the history of the two programs. It was just very nostalgic and I thought it was really special. The crowd was awesome, the ceremony was great."
Â
Louisville made a huge push from the bench to widen the gap, with an 18-6 run, from the 6:33 mark to 3:18 left in the half. The run composed of six shots from deep, three from Kasean Pryor, a pair from Adrian Wooley, and Mikel Brown Jr. with one as well. The run resulted in a 20-point lead for UofL with a score of 50-30.
Â
The Cards continued to hit from beyond the arc going into the break. Louisville shot 55% from deep and 92% from the charity stripe in the first. Pryor and Wooley could not miss from deep, Pryor making all three and Wooley making all four of his shots from long range.
Â
Louisville came out of the locker room and kept firing away, using a 14-4 run to go up 71-43. During the run, J'Vonne Hadley hit three shots from deep, with Ryan Conwell nailing a triple, and a bucket from Brown.
Â
Louisville had six players in double figures: Khani Rooths, Sananda Fru, Conwell, Brown, Pryor, and Wooley. And Memphis' Hasan Abdul Hakim had a game-high 18 points.
Â
Conwell led the Cards in scoring for the fifth time this season, on Saturday with 17 points. Conwell shot 43% behind the arc and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. Conwell also added two boards, two assists and a block on the day.
Brown continued his dominance, with 16 points, three assists, a defensive rebound, and his first block of his collegiate career. He shot 44% from deep and 89% from the line.
Â
Wooley had 15 points on the day, making 64% of his shots from deep, as well as three assists and three rebounds. Pryor had his best scoring day this season, finishing the game with 11 points, going perfect from downtown and perfect from the free throw line. He notched an assist, a steal and four defensive rebounds.
Â
"Everybody raised the level of play," added Kelsey. "When they come in you don't want guys off the bench to maintain the status quo. Our depth is one of our great assets as a team, but our players embrace it. They embrace it. Aly (Khalifa) didn't play as many minutes today, but man was he unbelievable on the sideline cheering Zou [Vangelis Zougris] on. Zou went on and gave us some big minutes and gave us a boost. KP [Kasean Pryor] came in, gave us a huge boost, got the crowd going, dyed his hair again, made three 3s, did what KP does. J'Vonne Hadley and Khani (Rooths) over there cheering their butts off for them. It's power of the unit. It's the uncommon commitment of the guy next to you. It breaks human nature, but it's something that we take such pride in. We recruit individuals that are about that and we protect that culture every single day and it was on display there tonight."
Â
The Cards had a season best field goal percentage, at 56%, three-point percentage, at 51%, and shot 84% from the charity stripe. Louisville won the defensive rebounding battle, 26-17, and the overall rebounding battle, 34-33.
Â
Louisville spread the wealth, assisting on 24 of the 30 field goals, making this the sixth 20-assist game for the Cards this season.
Â
Louisville now leads the series against the Tigers, 55-36, winning seven of the last 10 matchups.
Â
The Cardinals will be going on the road, visiting Knoxville and the Tennessee Volunteers. The 7 p.m. Tuesday night game will be broadcast on ESPN.
