Cards Carry Momentum from Third Comeback Win
November 03, 2025 | Football
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jeff Brohm knows how to push the right buttons for his team and it's been evident in his teams' success when facing early deficits.
The Cardinals pulled off their third come-from-behind win last Saturday with a 28-16 rout over Virginia Tech.
Trailing 16-7 at the half, and not being able to muster anything offensively, Brohm, the king of the adjustments, went to the lab and doctored up another dominating second half.
"We had the early touchdown and then we kind of fell into a little bit of a funk in the first half. That's what halftime is for: make adjustments, kind of reset the minds. We came out for the second half ready to play," said offensive lineman Pete Nygra about the Virginia Tech win.
Of the Cards' seven possessions in the second half against VT, three resulted in touchdowns after UofL trailed 16-7 at the break.
When asked about his halftime speech during the game, head coach Jeff Brohm said, "I thought this past halftime, we had our heads down a little bit and some people were disappointed and frustrated - and I wouldn't say ready to give in - but you just have a little bit of anger that's built up. I thought we needed to get the juices back going, [so] that we can play football."
Louisville mounted second half comebacks in two other games this season: against James Madison at home and when visiting Pittsburgh in the first Atlantic Coast Conference game of the year.
In all three games, the Cards had to post double-digit scores in the second half to complete the win, and eight different players scored in the third and fourth quarters for UofL across those games.
"I would love to win every quarter or every play, but it's not going to happen, so you've got to try to win more than they do, you've got to try to score more than they do, and you've got to try to make less mistakes than they do," Brohm continued. "If you do that, you will have a chance to win, and I think our guys have got to just keep playing. We've got to keep playing hard and we've got to keep believing in them no matter what the score is."
UofL possessed the ball for the majority of the second half against both Virginia Tech and Pitt, but despite having less than eight minutes in the second half of the matchup with JMU, the Cards outscored the Dukes 22-7 in the third and fourth quarters.
"This team is going to fight. I wouldn't want to go play with anyone else on Saturdays just because of how tough this team is," added Nygra about the player morale. "We're true competitors. We want to go win a game. We might be up by 20, down by 20, but we're going to fight to the end and find a way to win the game."
Both Nygra and defensive lineman Rene Konga mentioned the adjustments they had to make at halftime. Konga said, "...the coaches do a great job adjusting game plans, too, at halftime…I think Coach [Ron] English put forth the right calls to make and that definitely helped us in the win on Saturday."
Konga, Nygra and the rest of the UofL squad will be back in action when they host Cal for a Saturday night battle inside L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2
