No. 16 Louisville Focused on Matchup at Virginia Tech
October 29, 2025 | Football
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -Â The No. 16-ranked University of Louisville football team stays consistent on how it looks at each game, no matter if they win or lose.
Head coach Jeff Brohm has drilled into his team's head about the importance of each week being a one-game season. He reiterates consistently that no matter if the team wins or losses, they have to come back and perform the next week.
Louisville stands at 6-1 on the season, and looks to stay undefeated on the road this season when they face the next game in its attempt to stay in the race for the Atlantic Coast Conference title game at Virginia Tech on Saturday.
Starting the season unranked, the Cardinals have fought their way to the No. 16 ranking by just playing one game at a time.
"Every game we play we feel like we have a chip on our shoulder, whether we're playing EKU or No. 2 Miami," defensive lineman Wesley Bailey said. "At the end of the day it's a football game that we've got to go out there and execute and win. I feel like it's not about just being ranked, it's about continuously doing what we train to do every weekend."
"Coach [Brohm] always talks about a one game season and we understand that each and every week we've got to go earn it," offensive lineman Rasheed Miller echoed. "Whether we're ranked or unranked, win, lose, or draw, we've got a job to do and that's what we're focusing on - our execution."
"I just think for us - as boring as it sounds - a one game season is what we always preach," head coach Jeff Brohm added. "We talk about it, we work it. I think our guys fully understand, whether you win or lose one week, you've got to go win the next game. You can't get too high when you win, and you can't get too frustrated when you lose, otherwise you're not going to win the next game."
The Cards' opponent this weekend had no choice but to have a mentality shift. Virginia Tech started 2025 0-3 with losses to preseason-No. 13 South Carolina, Vanderbilt and in-state opponent Old Dominion. After the loss to ODU, the Hokies had a coaching change and are now being led by interim head coach Philip Montgomery.
Since Montgomery took over, VT is 3-2 with wins over Wofford and NC State and a double-overtime win against Cal last weekend. Virginia Tech's losses came to then-No. 13 Georgia Tech and a one-touchdown loss to Wake Forest.Â
Prior to the coaching change, Hokie quarterback Kyron Drones had just four passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns. In the games since, Drones has logged 895 passing yards, in addition to 10 touchdowns through the air and six on the ground.Â
UofL and VT will face off at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday inside Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Va. Louisville's first trip to Blacksburg since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference will be broadcast on The CW.Â
