Ahouda Advances to Quarterfinals at ITA Regionals

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team continues its run at ITA Ohio Valley Regionals as one duo and one singles player advance to day four.
After getting a bye in the first round, No. 1-seeded Walid Ahouda and Hamza El Amine came up just short against Vanderbilt's pair of Jack Satterfield and Hugo Coquelin, 8-7 (7-5).
Andre' Steinbach and Matei Onofrei advanced to the round of the sixteen after their opponents withdrew due to injury.
Onofrei was the first Card to play in singles, dropping his match 6-3, 6-1 to Nour Fathalla of Purdue.
No. 10-seeded Ahouda earned the first win of the day for Louisville in a three-set thriller over Middle Tennessee's Freddy Murray by a score of 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2.
No. 16-seeded El Amine was able to get out to an early lead over Stefan Simeunovic from Purdue, but ultimately dropped the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Rounding out the round of 32, No. 15-seeded Steinbach was able to defeat Jose Garcia from rival Tennessee in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
Heading into the next round later on in the day, Ahouda was able to pull off an upset over No. 6-seeded Facundo Yunis from regional foe Indiana in straight sets, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
Steinbach put up a strong battle in his matchup against No. 8-seeded Karim Al-Amin of Middle Tennessee, but fell 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.
Steinbach and Onofrei will play Tennessee State duo Taj Hibbert and Adler Germinal at 9 am ET tomorrow in the round of sixteen. If they advance, they will play in the quarterfinals at 10:45 am ET. Ahouda will face Vanderbilt player and No. 4 seed Pablo Martinez Gomez in the quarterfinals tomorrow at 12: 45 pm ET.
