September 08, 2024 | Men's Golf
TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Louisville men's golf team opens the fall season at the 17th Inverness Intercollegiate on Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 9-10.
The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Inverness Club, a renowned course that has hosted numerous major golf championships. Admission is free for the event that will begin with 36 holes on Monday (9:30 a.m. shotgun start) followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday (8:30 a.m., tee times on Holes No. 1 and 10).
The Inverness Club was founded in 1903, and along with the University of Toledo, served as host for the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Championships. Inverness hosted the 2021 Solheim Cup in addition to previously hosting four U.S. Opens, two U.S. Senior Opens, two PGA Championships and one U.S. Amateur. In the future, Inverness will host the 2027 U.S. Women's Open and the 2029 U.S. Amateur.
Thirteen of the 14 programs competing in the tournament were represented in NCAA postseason play last year as a team or individually, highlighted by defending national team champion Auburn. The tournament field also includes Cal Poly, Clemson, College of Charleston, Michigan, Oklahoma, Purdue, SMU, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt, Virginia, and Wake Forest.
Auburn is ranked No. 1 in the Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Preseason Coaches Poll and will be joined in the Glass City by No. 4 Vanderbilt, No. 6 Virginia, No. 12 Oklahoma, and No. 15 Texas Tech. Also receiving votes in the poll from the Inverness field are Clemson, Louisville, SMU, and Wake Forest.
The tournament will also feature six of the top 12 players in the World Amateur Golf Rankings in Vanderbilt's Gordon Sargent (No. 2), Auburn's Jackson Koivun (No. 3), Virginia's Ben James (No. 5), Vanderbilt's Jackson Van Paris (No. 8), Auburn's Brendan Valdes (No. 11), and Texas Tech's Calum Scott (No. 12).
Texas Tech is the tournament's two-time defending champion after capturing titles in 2019 and 2022. The Red Raiders outdistanced Tennessee by eight strokes in 2019 and Georgia Tech by six shots in 2022.
Coming off a regional appearance, the Cardinals return two starters in Sebastian Moss and Cooper Claycomb, who wil both lead the Cards on Monday. Moss was an All-ACC selection a year ago, while Claycomb played well in his first season. Brady Smith, who hails from Louisville, will make his debut as a true freshman.
