Cards score three unanswered goals en route to 3-1 win
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The seventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team scored three unanswered goals, including two in the fourth quarter, en route to a 3-1 win over Penn Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
Â
Aimee Plumb, Chloe Cuzzupe and Rylie Wollerton scored for Louisville (2-2) while Brandelynn Heinbaugh (1-1) and Emily Young split time at goalkeeper. Â In the game, the Cardinals outshot the Quakers 17-3 with a 10-2 edge in shots on goal and a 9-0 advantage in penalty corners. Penn goalkeeper Ruby de Frees (0-2) collected seven stops in goal for the Quakers who drop to 0-2 on the season .
Â
"We're happy to get a win, first and foremost. It was our first win at home this season," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "It feels good to be rewarded for our work on the field. We came out with great energy and we followed the game plan. They were doing everything that we asked them to do. We switched up some tactics a little bit at halftime and it started to open up a little bit… Overall very happy, we've improved each game, but our energy after a really tough game on Friday was spot on and fantastic."
Â
The Quakers broke though in the third minute second quarter when Julia Ryan connected on an assist from Livia Loozen.
Â
Louisville answered with 3:15 left in the second quarter when the Cardinals were awarded a penalty stroke and Aimee Plumb sent a shot past de Frees. The fifth-year senior's first goal of the season evened the score at 1-1.
Â
The game remained in a stalemate until early in the fourth quarter when Chloe Plumb's shot on goal was turned back by de Frees, but Cuzzupe redirected the rebound into the cage for her first goal of the season to put Louisville on top 2-1.
Â
The Cards kept the momentum in the final frame, striking again three minutes later after converting on their eighth penalty corner of the game. This time, Wollerton deflected Plumb's shot to deliver her team-best third goal of the season and give Louisville a 3-1 lead.
Â
Louisville will return to action on Sept. 13 when top-ranked Northwestern visits Trager Stadium for a 6 p.m. matchup.
