LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville football team faces its toughest challenge to date when it travels to No. 16 Notre Dame to take on the Fighting Irish Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
"Definitely excited about this weekend and the opportunity ahead for our football team," head coach Jeff Brohm said. It will be a great chance to test and see exactly how we stack up against one of the nation's best. I know our team is looking forward to having a great week of practice and trying to get better each and every day and going out there and trying to play our best on Saturday."
The Cardinals took home a 33-20 win over the Fighting Irish last season at home, breaking open a 10-10 game in the third quarter behind the running of Jawhar Jordan and a defense that turned over Notre Dame three times.
"Without question when you lose to a certain team one year maybe when you're supposed to win you're going to be prepared and go above and beyond to make sure it doesn't happen again so I'm sure they are going to do that," said Brohm. "First off it's a very talented football team; I mean really talented across the board. A lot of great players and they are well coached, the defense has been outstanding, they want to run the ball and use their quarterback as a runner and not turn it over; you know presents challenges."
The Cardinals must prepare for the power running attack led by quarterback Riley Leonard, who rushed for over 150 yards last week and is the team's second leading rusher.
"Well once again he is very similar to the quarterback we faced last week verse Georgia Tech, he can run the football, he can use his legs to win," Brohm said. "They have done a good job this year of calling specific quarterback runs and making you defend against an extra blocker, which presents challenges. He still has the ability to throw the ball so I just think it will be another good test for our defense, we'll have to be really sharp. Not giving up big plays will be big, not giving up big quarterback runs it's one thing if you two, three, four sometimes five yards but big runs will be a big play."
The Cardinals are looking to go 4-0 for the second-straight season and are attempting for their third win over a ranked opponent during the Brohm era. Brohm's team knocked off No. 10 Notre Dame last season and blanked No. 20 Duke at home during the same season.
