Brohm Previews ACC Opener Against Georgia Tech
September 16, 2024 | Football
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After two non-conference wins to open the year, University of Louisville head football coach Jeff Brohm and the Cardinals look to start Atlantic Coast Conference play when Georgia Tech visits this Saturday at L&N Stadium.
Louisville is coming off a bye week after a 49-14 win against Jacksonville State on Sept. 7 behind 349 yards and two touchdowns from quarterback Tyler Shough.
"We're excited to get back to playing football, especially at home versus a really good opponent," Brohm said. "(Georgia Tech) has done a great job so far this year so we know we have our hands full. We're going against a team that's very efficient on offense, in the passing and running game."
Brohm, who has been open about his disdain for bye weeks, but understands that each school is getting two bye weeks this season, which is an opportunity to let the younger guys get more reps in during practice.
"We have two bye weeks this year, which I don't love but they're there, so we try and get our guys fresh and healthy which we did. It's important that they know that we have an important stretch of games coming up that we have to be ready for," Brohm said. "We have to continue to progress to reach our ultimate goal and you've got to be sharp each week. Getting guys fresh and healthy and rejuvenated was important while we continue to work on certain things and continue to get our young guys some reps. That's what we did but now we're back on a normal routine and schedule."
Going into this game Brohm highlights the importance of returning to action and the challenge of facing a tough opponent. Georgia Tech's quarterback, Haynes King presents a challenge of a dual threat quarterback. King nearly pulled off a win over Louisville in last season's ACC opener. The quarterback threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns in a 39-34 loss.
"First off in the passing game, you can't allow him a lot of rushing lanes, the ability to scramble and get yards, or to run the quarterback draw and get yards, " Brohm said. "We have to prevent that as well as we can. Of course you have the design quarterback runs, quarterback pulls, misdirection, and they're going to motion quite a bit every play with their slot receivers and create some eye candy for you."
Louisville's quarterback, Shough has shown remarkable growth and resilience throughout the season, throwing for 581 yards and six touchdowns.
"He's done a great job so far without question," Brohm said. "He's been very efficient. He can throw the ball and he's practiced well since he's been here so I think he understands what we're doing and how to do it. Now we're going to face some really good football teams that are going to challenge him more and he'll have to be good in his decision making."
On the defensive side of the ball, Ashton Gillotte is having a great start to his season with seven tackles, 1.5 TFLs, and one sack.
"Ashton can do a lot of things for us. He can rush on the outside. He's physical, he's strong, he's got some quick twitch as well. I think when he can power rush and add the speed at the end, that's when he is his most effective."
The Cardinals will continue their three-game home stand Saturday afternoon at L&N Stadium. Kickoff versus Georgia Tech is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on the ESPN 2.
