LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm is optimistic heading into the start of the 2024 season.
"It's definitely great to get practice underway," Brohm said. I think our guys prepared hard all spring and summer. Pretty much everyone's here ready to go, and I think it's important that we utilize the next month to get fully up to speed. I like this football team after what I've seen this summer. WE have to continue to put in the work and I'm confident we will do that."
The Cardinals have to get up to speed because they welcomed 41 new players to the roster after hitting the transfer portal hard for the second consecutive season. This season, Louisville added 27 players out of the portal, including its starting quarterback in Tyler Shough.
"I do think it's important to have some experienced players on the roster," Brohm said. "I think its important to have guys who have experience, who have been through the ups-and-downs of college football. I think we have guys who are willing to learn and are wanting to go out with a bang. We have seen progress in the second-year guys, and hope they can carry it over to the games.":
One of those experienced players, Shough is prepared for his final season as a college football player after three seasons with the Red Raiders. The seventh-year senior is coming off an injury-plagued season that saw his throw for 746 yards in limited action.
"I like Tyler a lot," Brohm said. "I like what he brings to our offense, He has a lot of ability and a good arm."
While Brohm is an offensive-minded coach, he thinks his defense might be able to carry the load this season, especially with the return of all-conference performer Ashton Gillotte and Quincy Riley, who was second with three interceptions last season.
"I do think we have the ability to be really good on defense," Brohm said. "I like our scheme and our personnel. I think we have a really good plan which will help us be a top-notch defense in 2024."
The Cardinals added depth on the defensive side of the ball, especially in the secondary and the defensive line.
"We added alot of key talented pieces on defense," Brohm said. "These additions on defense will help us and we need them to play now. From what we've seen, we think a lot of those guys we help us now."
The Cardinals are looking to stop their three-game slide when they host Austin Peay on Aug. 31 at Noon.
"It was a combination of things that caused us to lose three in a row. From a coaching aspect, there are things we could have done better in my opinion. "In ordcer to be competitive against good teams, you have to be sharp late in the season. We need to put a good plan together so our players can be successful."
Notes
- Brohm said Lance Robinson will miss the season with an injury.
- Mason Reiger will miss training camp and could return at some point.
