ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Louisville track & field teams concluded the first of three days of competition at the ACC Outdoor Championships on Thursday.
After the scoring of three events on the first day of competition, the men's squad currently sits in eighth place, while the women are 12th in the team standings.
Gianna Rotelli made her mark in her first conference championship meet, as the freshman recorded a mark of 41.83m (137-3) to place seventh in the women's javelin throw, becoming only the third Cardinal in program history to score in the event at the ACC meet.
In the men's hammer throw, Erik Fertig posted a season-best mark of 61.50m (201-9) to round out the top eight in the event and score for the team at the ACC Outdoor Championships for the third time in his collegiate career.
The Cards also got off to a solid start in the multi events with Lucy Fellows taking part in the women's heptathlon and Dominic Lowe beginning competition in the men's decathlon.
Through the first four events of the heptathlon, Fellows sits fourth overall with a total of 3,185 points, keyed by a pair of personal-best performances in the 200m and shot put. The freshman will continue the heptathlon with the long jump tomorrow morning at 12:30 p.m.
Lowe holds the eighth-highest point total at the halfway point of the decathlon, accumulating 3,525 points over the first five events while setting new personal-best marks in the 100m and long jump. The ten-event decathlon will roll on with the 110m hurdles at 11:30 a.m.
On the track, Rylee Penn started off her weekend with an automatic qualification for Saturday's finals in the women's 1500m, winning her heat in 4:22.45 to become the first 1500m finalist at the ACC Championships, either male or female, in program history.
Action will resume tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. with the men's javelin throw, while track events are set to get underway for the Cardinals at 6:55 p.m. with the women's 400m preliminaries.
