LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Louisville track & field teams closed out the fourth and final day of competition at the NCAA East Regionals on Saturday, punching two more tickets to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Soledad Jean qualified for the national championship meet for the first time in the women's high jump, while Jayden Ulrich clinched her spot in the women's discus throw, her second NCAA qualification of the week.
With the pair finishing inside the top-12 in their respective events, the Cardinals will send six student-athletes in seven events to the national championship meet in Eugene, Ore.
Jean became the first Louisville female to qualify for the national meet in the women's high jump since 2012 and only the third in program history to clear six feet in the event, finishing with a personal-best mark of 1.84m (6-0.5) to place fourth before the event was halted after the top 12 spots were finalized.
Along with Brion Stephens' qualification in the men's high jump on Friday, the pair became the first male-female duo to punch their tickets to the national championships in the high jump since Rachel Gehret and Tone Belt did so in 2009.
After posting the top mark in the women's shot put on Thursday, Ulrich finished as the runner-up in the women's discus throw with a mark of 62.95m (206-6) to become the first Louisville athlete to qualify for the national championships in multiple individual events since Makenli Forrest competed in both the discus throw and hammer throw at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Alba Cuns Iglesias rounded out the week in the women's triple jump, finishing 40th with a final mark of 12.23m (40-1.5) in her first appearance at the regional meet.
The Cardinals will now begin preparations for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which are set to take place at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. from June 5-8.
