
Burkey, Kibiwot Punch Tickets to NCAA Outdoor Championships

Burkey clinched a spot in the men’s long jump, while Kibiwot advanced to the championship meet in the men’s 10000m.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Louisville track & field teams completed the first day of competition at the NCAA East Regionals on Wednesday, clinching a pair of spots at next month's NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Jake Burkey (long jump) and Ian Kibiwot (10000m) both punched their tickets to the championship meet in Eugene, Ore. by placing within the top-12 in their respective events at the regional.
Burkey secured his second straight berth at the outdoor national championships in the men's long jump, earning ninth place after equaling his personal-best with a mark of 7.58m (24-10.5) that came on his second attempt of the competition.
On the track, Kibiwot cruised to a fourth-place finish in the men's 10000m with a final time of 29:11.43, moving on to the national championship meet for the first time in his career while also becoming the first Louisville male to qualify in the event since 2015.
Along with Burkey, the Cardinals fielded three other athletes in the men's long jump with Jeremiah Willis narrowly missing out on a qualifying spot after finishing 14th with a mark of 7.48m (24-6.5). Roman Kuleshov placed 35th with a mark of 7.06m (23-2) before taking part in the men's triple jump on Friday, and Trae Burns finished 48th after leaping 6.67m (21-10.75).
In the men's hammer throw, Erik Fertig capped off his collegiate career with a final mark of 60.53m (198-7) that secured him 30th place in his third career appearance at the regional meet.
After changes to the schedule due to expected inclement weather in the area, the Cardinals will begin the first day of the women's competition tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. with the pole vault. The full schedule for Louisville athletes on Thursday can be found below.
