Ulrich Crushes Shot Put Record to Win East Regional Title
May 23, 2024 | Track & Field
Her winning mark of 18.66m (61-2.75) currently stands fourth in the NCAA and 15th in the world during the 2024 season.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Jayden Ulrich continued her unprecedented stretch of dominance as the University of Louisville track & field teams wrapped up the second day of competition at the NCAA East Regionals.
The junior punched her ticket to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the women's shot put, winning the East Regional title with a eye-popping mark of 18.66m (61-2.75) on what would be her only attempt of the competition.
The mark currently stands as the fourth-best in the NCAA and as the 15th-best mark in the world (sixth among Americans) over the course of the 2024 season, while also shattering her program record of 18.27m set earlier this season, as well as the facility record of 18.04m that was set in 2017 by Raven Saunders of Ole Miss.
Ulrich will look to become the first Cardinal to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in multiple individual events since 2019 when she returns to competition on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. ET with the women's discus throw, an event in which she holds the NCAA lead entering the regional meets.
Rylee Penn capped off her collegiate career in the women's 1500m, placing 22nd in the preliminary round with a time of 4:19.13, giving the senior four of the six best times in program history during her only season with the Cardinals.
Lucy Fellows finished her first year as a collegian, placing 41st in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.70m (18-8.5) after a campaign in which she placed fourth in the heptathlon at the ACC Outdoor Championships.
Competition will resume tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. with the women's pole vault after the event was postponed due to inclement weather in the area. The full schedule for Louisville athletes on Friday can be found below.
