May 01, 2024 | Men's Golf
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville men's golf team was selected as the No. 8 seed at the NCAA LSU Regional (Baton Rouge, La.), which will be contested at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La., on May 13-15, it was announced Wednesday afternoon on the Golf Channel.
The Cardinals were one of 51 automatic bids combined with 30 automatic qualifiers to qualify for the six regionals. The top five teams from each regional will advance along with the top individual from non-advancing teams from the regions.
UofL is making its sixth consecutive regional appearance and the 14th overall trip in school history. Last season, Louisville was the No. 5 seed in the Morgan Hill Regional in San Jose, Calif., where they finished in a tie for eighth place.
The Cardinals, who are making their ninth post-season appearance in the last 11 years, earned a bid after picking up six top-five finishes, including a win at the General Hackler Championship.
Max Kennedy, who was recently selected to the International Arnold Palmer Cup Team, has been the team's most consistent performer all season, posting four finishes in the top 10, including a win at the General Hackler Championship, where he carded a score of eight-under-par. He owns a 72.25 stroke average, which is second on the team, and has recorded 14 rounds of even-par or better this year.
Sebastian Moss also has emerged this year with a team best 71.75 average and became the first player in school history to win back-to-back tournaments when he won the Bearcat and Rod Myers Invitational earlier this fall with combined scores of 23-under-par.
In his first season with the Cardinals, Cooper Claycomb has totaled four top-15 finishes, with the career best third at the General Hackler Championship after shooting 6-under-par. Easton Johnson and Clay Pendergrass have also been key contributors to the team's success this year.
The LSU Regional features five of the nation's top 25 teams, including Auburn, the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. Virginia, one of two Atlantic Coast Conference foes in the region, is ranked No. 12, while Texas Tech is No. 14, Oregon is No. 24 and Duke, the other ACC competitor, comes in at No. 25. Louisville enters regional action as the No. 48 team in the country.
Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 24-29 at the Omni LaCosta Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
