Ulrich Wows in Shot Put on First Day of Clark Wood Invitational

The junior shattered the school, facility and meet record to move into the top-six nationally on the event thus far this season with a mark of 18.27m (59-11.25).
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jayden Ulrich continued her stretch of dominance in the women's shot put as the University of Louisville track & field teams completed the first day of competition at the Clark Wood Invitational on Friday.
Ulrich won the invitational section of the women's shot put with an otherworldly toss of 18.27m (59-11.25) that broke her own program record as well as the facility and meet records, while also standing as the sixth-best toss in the NCAA entering the weekend.
After breaking her own school record of 18.00m on her first attempt of the day with a toss of 18.08m, the junior came back on her third attempt with the heave of 18.27m as she continued to stake her claim as one of the top throwers in the nation.
Alessandra Rodriguez earned an event victory of her own in the women's 800m, clocking a new personal-best time of 2:09.99 to become the seventh woman in school history to break the 2:10 barrier.
In the women's hammer throw, Zoe Yeast set a season-best mark of 55.24m (181-2) while finishing as the runner-up in the event. Erik Fertig also finished on the podium in the men's iteration of the event, recording a toss of 60.03m (196-11) to round out the top three.
Lucy Fellows placed fourth in the invitational section of the women's long jump with a mark of 6.05m (19-10.25), the second time in her young career that the freshman has leapt over six meters in the event.
The Cards rounded out the day with fifth-place finishes from Adam Axelrod, who recorded a wind-aided mark of 7.28m (23-10.75) in the open section of the men's long jump, and Dominic Lowe, who cleared a personal-best bar of 3.83m (12-6.75) in the unseeded section of the men's pole vault.
In total, the Cardinals finished the first day of competition with a pair of event victories and eight top-five individual finishes, while seeing nine athletes set new personal-bests.
The Clark Wood Invitational will roll on tomorrow with field events beginning at 10:00 a.m. with the women's javelin throw and track events starting at 12:15 with the preliminary round of the women's 100m hurdles.
